HeatShield Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Fireplace Services in Bethesda: What to Know First

We provide independent HeatShield fireplace repair and service in Bethesda, and most jobs are done in a single visit. HeatShield is a cerfractory flue repair system, a cast-in-place ceramic we use to resurface damaged flue tiles without tearing out your chimney. If your HeatShield liner is cracked, spalling, or failing, the honest answer is this: we’ll put a camera up there and show you exactly what’s going on before we recommend anything. Pricing is upfront, and you’ll know the number before a single tool comes off the truck. Call (240) 618-3233 for a free estimate, and you’ll talk to a live person, not a call center.

This page is for Bethesda homeowners who already have a HeatShield system installed, or who are trying to figure out whether their fireplace needs one. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, that’s fine too. Wendell and his crew have been working chimneys in Bethesda since 1999, and there are not many flues around here we haven’t seen.

How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

HeatShield is a good system when it’s installed right. But like anything inside a chimney, it lives in a harsh environment. Here’s what we actually see in Bethesda homes, and how we handle each one.

  • Spalling and delamination in the Eco-Grip base coat. HeatShield works because the cerfractory material bonds to the existing flue tile. If the original surface wasn’t cleaned properly before application, or if moisture has been getting in through a cracked crown, the material starts peeling away in sheets. We scrape out the loose material, treat the surface, and reapply the HeatShield resurfacing compound in layers the way the manufacturer specifies.
  • Flue tile joints showing through the HeatShield “CeCure” liner. HeatShield’s CeCure system is designed to fill gaps and joints in the original tile. But on older Bethesda flues, particularly in homes near Kenwood and Edgemoor where the tile has shifted, we sometimes see joint lines telegraphing through within a few years. That’s not a product defect - it’s movement in the original chimney. We address the underlying movement first, then recoat.
  • Water intrusion through the smoke shelf area. HeatShield covers the flue, but the smoke shelf and damper housing are separate trouble spots. A lot of Bethesda homeowners call us thinking their HeatShield failed because water is dripping into the firebox. More often than not, the liner is fine and the real problem is a rusted damper or a missing chimney cap. That’s a cheaper fix, and I’ll tell you that plainly.
  • Corrosion at the top termination of the liner. The top few feet of any liner take the worst of the weather. On HeatShield systems, we check where the cerfractory meets the flue tile at the crown. If the crown is cracked or the wash is pitched wrong, water sits there and works its way under the HeatShield edge. Fixing the crown and reapplying the top termination usually solves it.
  • Improper original installation thickness. HeatShield material should be applied to a measured thickness. A thin coat fails early. A thick coat just wastes material. We use a wet-film gauge and verify the depth meets the system spec as we go. You won’t see this on a national chain’s checklist because they’re not looking that close.

Our HeatShield Fireplace Services Process

Every HeatShield job we do in Bethesda follows the same path. No shortcuts, no surprises.

  1. 1
You call and talk to a person. Wendell himself may pick up. We talk through what you’re seeing, and we’ll set a real window for the visit, not a four-hour range.
  2. 2
Camera inspection with you watching. We run a camera up the flue and show you the footage on the spot. You see what we see. If the HeatShield is solid and you just need a sweep, that’s what we tell you.
  3. 3
Plain-English verdict and priced repair. If the HeatShield needs resurfacing, we’ll show you the cracks in the camera shot, explain what caused them, and hand you a written quote before work starts. The number doesn’t change at the end.
  4. 4
The repair itself. We prepare the flue surface to spec, then apply HeatShield material in proper coats with measured thickness. For fireplace inserts or connected appliances, we’ll verify clearances and venting while we’re in there.
  5. 5
Re-test and show you the result. Camera goes back up. You’ll see the finished liner for yourself before we leave.
  6. 6
90-Day Done Right Promise. Every HeatShield job we do is backed in writing. If something’s not right, one call brings Wendell back. No second invoice.

What HeatShield Fireplace Services Costs in Bethesda

Here’s the straight answer, because you deserve a number before you decide anything. Actual pricing depends on what the camera shows, and we’ll give you an exact quote after inspection, free of charge.

Service Typical Range in Bethesda
HeatShield inspection with camera (credited toward repair) $99-$150
HeatShield resurfacing, single flue $3,500-$5,500
HeatShield repair, partial delamination $900-$2,200
Chimney cap replacement plus crown repair (with HeatShield touch-up) $650-$1,400
Damper repair or replacement paired with HeatShield service $350-$800

What moves the price: how tall your flue is (three-story Bethesda homes near Bradley Hills cost more in labor than a single-story rambler), how much surface prep is needed, and whether the crown or cap needs work at the same time. Every estimate is free, and there’s no trip charge if you’re inside our service county. Call (240) 618-3233 and we’ll schedule the camera inspection.

Why Bethesda Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for HeatShield Work

Plenty of chimney companies will tell you they can handle HeatShield. Not many of them have been doing it in Bethesda since 1999, with a published address and a license number under the owner’s name. Wendell Pike started Top Hat Chimney the year most national franchises were still just regional call centers. Today, he still runs the day-to-day, still answers the phone sometimes, and still shows up on the job. That matters when the person recommending a $4,000 liner is the same person who has to go back and make it right if it’s wrong.

We work with HeatShield because it’s a good system when it fits the chimney. We also service DuraFlex and Gelco, so if HeatShield isn’t the right answer for your flue, we’ll say so and recommend what is. No brand loyalty that overrides common sense. If it doesn’t need doing, we’ll tell you.

Every call is answered by a live person, around the clock. Every tech is background-checked and in uniform. Every job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. And every senior and veteran gets 10% off. That’s been true for going on three decades now.
