Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco crowns are cast-concrete chimney caps sized to the flue tile layout, not tied to a specific fireplace model number. What matters is the outside dimensions of your chimney’s top course of brick and the layout of the flue tiles sticking through it. Most Gelco crowns we replace in Bethesda are the standard 4-inch-thick cast units with a 2-inch overhang, but the older homes near Kenwood and Edgemoor often have custom-poured crowns that were never a stock Gelco size to begin with.

The compatibility gotcha is this: Gelco’s off-the-shelf crowns assume a level top course. If your chimney settled and the top course of brick is out of level by more than half an inch, a stock crown will never seat right, and water will find the gap in the first hard rain. We check that with a 4-foot level before we ever quote a replacement. For OEM versus aftermarket, Gelco’s own crowns are solidly made and we install them when the dimensions are a true match. But for older Bethesda chimneys with odd flue layouts, a quality aftermarket cast or a properly formed poured crown does the same job for less money and we can match it exactly to the opening. Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks across the crown surface. Concrete expands and contracts with Maryland’s freeze-thaw cycles, and a crown that looked fine in September can show a web of cracks by March. Water gets in, freezes, and widens them every winter.
• Spalling or flaking concrete on the ground or roof. That sandy grit at the base of the chimney means the crown surface is shedding. The aggregate in the concrete is coming loose, and what’s left is porous and soaking up water.
• Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. A failed crown is the most common entry point we find for water that shows up indoors. It runs down the outside of the flue liner and into the framing before you ever see it on the crown itself.
• Moss or algae growing on the crown. That means the surface holds moisture. A proper crown sheds water. A failing one keeps it, and Maryland’s humid summers give moss everything it needs.
• The crown has pulled away from the flue tile, leaving a visible gap. This is the one we see most often on older Gelco crowns. The sealant between tile and crown breaks down, and the gap becomes a direct channel for rain into the chimney chase.
