Which Famco Models This Applies To

The flexible liners were sized for wood stoves and pellet inserts, with 6-inch and 8-inch being the common diameters. Identifying what you have is usually a matter of looking at the rating plate near the appliance collar or measuring the old liner’s inside diameter once it’s pulled.

One compatibility gotcha that catches people: Famco’s early flexible liners used a lighter gauge stainless than most aftermarket brands, and the seam lock on those older 400-series liners was prone to opening up if a fire got too hot. If you’re swapping an old Famco liner, do not simply buy the same product to replace it. A modern DuraFlex or equivalent in the same diameter will give you a heavier wall and better seam construction for about the same money. Signs Your Famco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

• Flakes of metal or rust in the firebox or clean-out door. This means the liner wall is losing material from the inside out. By the time you see rust flakes, there’s usually pinhole-through damage already started, and the fix is not a patch.
• Smoke smell in rooms nowhere near the fireplace. Cracks in the liner let exhaust press through masonry gaps into wall cavities and upstairs rooms. In Bethesda’s older colonials and cape cods with shared wall chases, this shows up in bedrooms above the chimney.
• The carbon monoxide detector is triggering intermittently during burns. This is the one you do not wait on. A liner crack is invisible from the outside, but flue gases are finding a shortcut out before they reach the top of the stack.
• White or dark staining on the exterior chimney brick. Moisture and creosote bleeding through weakened liner seams will discolor the brick face over time. On Famco liners specifically, the seam-lock distortion in the flex line shows as a dark vertical streak on the chimney face.
• The furnace or boiler draft is suddenly worse than last season. A liner with internal collapse or heavy scaling chokes the draft, so the appliance runs smoky and the combustion is incomplete. Your energy bill creeps up, but the real issue is the chimney, not the burner.
